ST. NERSESS ARMENIAN SEMINARY

St. Nersess Armenian Seminary was established in 1961 under the auspices of the Dioceses of the Armenian Church in America (and more recently of Canada). The Seminary was named after one of the most revered fathers of the Armenian Church: St. Nersess Shnorhali—the Graceful—a great hymnographer, theologian, ecumenist, and Catholicos (in office 1166-1173AD). The Seminary’s mission is inspired by its patron saint’s commitment to theological inquiry, pastoral care, liturgical revival, and ecumenism. As the fundamental figure in a movement for Armenian self-understanding, and for the mutual understanding and reconciliation of Christians East and West, St. Nersess is the outstanding paradigm of the clerical ideal to whose standard we strive to prepare our students and ourselves.
St. Nersess Armenian Seminary provides quality education and training to our growing group of seminarians, current clergy, and the community. Its commitment to the growth of the Armenian Church will be achieved through the continuing education of current priests; support and training of Armenian priests from abroad; research and educational opportunities for exchange faculty and students; and the continuation of our 50+ year tradition of summer youth conferences and deacons’ training programs. St. Nersess Armenian Seminary is the only seminary in the Western Hemisphere.

St. Nersess has expanded its mission to include the following when it moves to its new Armonk, NY, campus in mid-2014:
  • Educational and training workshops for current priests through continuing education programs
  • Acclimation and acculturation support and training for Armenian priests from abroad who will serve in North American dioceses
  • Research and educational opportunities for exchange faculty and students from the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem
  • Extended study programs in our seminaries in Armenia and Jerusalem to strengthen the Armenian education of our American born seminarians
  • Undergraduate programs that combine local college study and courses, worship, and residence at St. Nersess Seminary
  • Continuation and expansion of the 50 year tradition of summer youth programs, retreats, and altar server programs
